What/When: St. Mary’s gives a big “welcome back” to Scottish supergroup Daimh (“Dive”), the unchallenged champions of “straight in the eye” Highland music, for a matinee performance on Sunday, October 27th . With a reputation as masters of the bagpipe and fiddle, Angus Mackenzie and Gabe McVarish lead the melodic powerhouse with fellow founding member, Robb Martin underpinning the groove on guitar. The “new guy” Murdo “Yogi” Cameron on mandola and accordion complete the instrumental line-up, and rising star, Ellen MacDonald, adds sweet, sweet authentic vocals.
Taking the name from the Gaelic word for “kinship” Daimh (pronounced “Dive”) has taken its contemporary take on Highland and Gaelic music to over 20 countries, setting audiences alight from Moscow to San Francisco. Recent accolades include last year’s award for the “Best Folk Band in Europe” at the prestigious Folkherbst competition in Germany and most recently winner of “Folk Band of the Year” at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards.
