Check out our upcoming opportunities to grow deeper in our faith together!
July – After the Sunday worship service, we will meet in Edwards Hall for a series on the parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field” and other enigmatic parables are in our lectionary this July. Join us after church to learn about how Jesus taught with parables and explore a few of them more deeply.
- July 9 – Introduction to Parables
- July 16 – The Parable of the Sower
- July 23 – The Weeds and the Wheat
- July 30 – Parables of the Kingdom
August – Wednesday night book group and potluck dinner, 6-8pm in Edwards Hall. We will read together Brian McLaren’s book Do I Stay Christian: A Guide for the Doubters, the Disappointed, and the Disillusioned. Even if you don’t identify as one of those, this will be a thought-provoking conversation on just what it means to each of us to call ourselves Christian. A 30-minute interview with Brian on the book is available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXNq12qpX4Y
- August 9 – No (chapters 1-10)
- August 16 – Yes (chapters 11-20)
- August 23 – How (chapters 21-28)
- August 30 – How/Next Steps/Wrap-up
Penny will order the books in advance. Please email Penny by June 30th if you would like to participate in the group order. The suggested donation is $20. Alternatively you can order the book or e-book directly. Watch for details on the RSVP and potluck signup in the weekly email.
September – under development, things to think about:
The Bible Challenge – there is some interest in a daily discipline of reading scripture. The Bible Challenge is one way to read through the Bible in a year; there are other ways as well. It is often easier to do this with the support and encouragement of a small group. If you are interested in learning more or joining in, contact Pastor Kristine.
Inquirer’s Class – If you are new to St. Mary’s, or new to the Episcopal Church, or if you want to learn more about our traditions and beliefs, or dive deeper into your own faith, plan to participate in this 6-week class led by Pastor Kristine. We will set a schedule that meets the needs of those who wish to participate, so please contact Pastor Kristine if you’re interested.
