Rector’s Reflection - June 2025

Happy Pride, St. Mary’s!

Why celebrate Pride? Because we believe that every human being is created in the image of God. Every human being reveals something about the nature of God. For us to have the fullest possible understanding of God, we need to learn from as many people as possible (and don’t get me started on learning about creation and the universe…). For far too long, the image of God revealed in LGBTQ+ persons was not honored. In many cultures and churches and corners of our society that is still the case, but not in the Episcopal church. I invite you to read this article and check out The Episcopal Church’s website to learn more.

Our own website explicitly points out that St. Mary’s is open and affirming; that is, all are invited to bring their whole selves to life and ministry in this place. All means all. This is one way we live into our baptismal vow to “and respect the dignity of every human being.” In scripture we often read of God’s admonition to care for the poor, the needy, the widow and orphan. Today we understand that to mean any oppressed group, including our LGBTQ+ siblings. It cannot be on earth as it is in heaven until every reflection of God is respected and honored equally.

I am delighted that our diocese is a sponsor of Monterey Peninsula Pride, and excited that St. Mary’s will be participating in the June 28 celebration. We have a banner, many of you will have t-shirts, and we’ll have stickers to hand out. Watch for details and plan to attend. God made each of us fabulous; let’s celebrate!
